Everything begins with one person and one idea. In early 2017, the City of Waconia received a $5,000 donation from Quinn Larson and his family to kick start the fundraising for an Inclusive Playground for Waconia. Over the past year, the passion and interest in this playground - and providing a space for people of all abilities - has grown. Donations continue to be received at the City, totaling approximately $12,000 as of September of 2018.
Design work for the playground will commence this winter.
How Can You Get Involved?
The City of Waconia is rounding up members to serve on a Task Force that will serve as the design committee for the future Inclusive Playground that is planned at Waterford Park. This project will replace the current equipment at the park with a focus on providing fun for people of all abilities, including a new surface, equipment, etc.
The City is looking for a wide range of people with a wider range of skills, experience, and expertise to serve on this Task Force. We are also looking to include a few parent/child members on the Task Force. We anticipate the work of the Task Force to take between four and six months.
Can you swing into action and be part of the team? Applications are being accepted through September 30. Fill out an application here, or, if you prefer a paper copy, stop by City Hall (201 S. Vine Street) to pick one up or let us know and we can send one to you via mail or email. If you have questions about the Inclusive Playground project, please contact City Administrator Susan Arntz at 952-442-3100 or via email at email@example.com.
The initial concept of the playground includes an inclusive play system and accessible surfacing, with costs of approximately $600,000 or more. The goal is to fundraise $400,000 to $500,000. The project is currently anticipated in 2023, unless funds can be raised quicker - then the project would start sooner. The City has earmarked some funds for this project and is working on the concept design for an additional park building with restrooms adjacent to this playground.
